Laying the Foundation: American Indian Education in North Carolina
|
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke opened as the Croatan Normal School in 1887 for the education of American Indians in Robeson County. When schools in the state were desegregated, Indians often lost community schools that served as community centers. This article appeared in the Fall 2005 issue of Tar Heel Junior Historian magazine.
