description

Many people characterize the American Revolution as a war fought between the British and the American colonists. However, another group of people, the American Indians, participated in the war. In North Carolina, the Cherokee and the Catawba ultimately supported the side that they thought would best ensure the protection of their tribal lands. This article examines the actions of these two American Indian groups in North Carolina during the American Revolution. This article originally appeared in the Fall 1992 Tar Heel Junior Historian Magazine.
