description

The demanding work on the Blue Ridge Parkway began in the 1930s under the direction of the Public Works Administration (a New Deal agency). This project provided work for thousands of unemployed North Carolinians during the Great Depression and resulted in a roadway that highlighted the scenic North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. This article originally appeared in the Spring 1985 Tar Heel Junior Historian Magazine.
