description

Although the scuppernong grape did not become the state fruit until 2001, this little grape's role in North Carolina history predates the exploration and colonization of the Cape Fear River valley. The sweet potato became the state vegetable in the 1990s, but its edible presence in North Carolina goes back to the dinosaurs! This article appeared in the Raleigh News & Observer, 26 September 2003.
