Union or Disunion? North Carolina Votes for Secession
|
Secession was a controversial issue in North Carolina throughout the 1850s and early 1860s. Some people, called Unionist, wanted NC to stay a part of the United States while others felt that NC should join other southern states in opposing Republican leadership. Rising tension over slavery, the secession of other southern states, the election of Lincoln, and finally, Lincoln’s call for troops to protect Fort Sumter led to North Carolina’s secession from the Union in May 1861.
